Belmont Fire Log: That's Not Smoke You're Smelling

Incidents and emergencies handled by the Belmont Fire Department.

That's not smoke you're smelling March 3 – Early in the morning, at a quarter to 5 a.m., the entire Belmont Fire Department – Engine 1 and 2, Ladder 1, Rescue 1 and command cars – rushed to a house on Brighton Street for a reported strong odor of smoke inside the building. Engine 2 was the first to arrive on scene and the crew soon determined that what they were smelling was not from a fire. The firefighters descended into the basement and very quickly concluded that the odor was not from a blaze but a very smelly skunk. Firefighters will do a lot for residents – fight fires, rescue people, rush people to the hospital and unlock cars – but a skunk is an issue to be resolved by the homeowner. Another leaks March 4 – Ten minutes after 3 p.m…

Belmont Police Log: Grinch Breaks into Jewelers Christmas Morning

Incidents handled by the Belmont Police. Just because you're arrested doesn't mean you've been convicted of anything.

Assault by alcohol Dec. 23 – In the pre-dawn hours of a Belmont morning, officers were called at 5 a.m. by a Hull Street resident after he said he was assaulted. But arriving patrolmen discovered very early on in their investigation that the caller was clearly in an intoxicated state and the alleged attack didn't actually occur. The officers did decide to take the resident into protective custody, for his own good. Not that important Dec. 23 –  Just before noon, a Lake Street resident arrived at the police station to file a complaint that someone had fraudulently been using his credit cards. It happens.  An afternoon activity involving open flame Nov. 25 – Just a minute before 1 p.m., Engine 2 was dispatched to a Raleigh Road home for a reported outdoor fire. Turns out the homeowner was burning a good supply of wood in a "chiminia" in the back yard. The chiminia – it's a freestanding front-loading fireplace or oven with a bulbous body and usually a vertical smoke vent – was also in rather close proximity to the neighbor's garage so the firefighters asked the resident to extinguish the fire which he did so with some water prior to the BFD's departure. He was…
