Belmont Girls' Hoops Now 7-1, Head to #2 Reading Friday

Marauders never trailed vs. Winchester; will look to do the same Friday against the Rockets.

After dispatching Winchester High, 56-38, on Tuesday night, Jan. 8 for its seventh win (against a single loss) of the season, Belmont High School Girls' Hoopsters are looking forward to matching up at the end of the week with the best of the best. Head Coach Melissa Hart's team will head up Route 128 for a Friday night battle royal with undefeated Reading High School. That would be a Rocket team unbeaten since December ... of 2011.  Ranked number 2 in Eastern Massachusetts by the Boston Globe, the defending Div. 2 state champions (which went 25-0 last year) is led by senior superstar Olivia Healy, which ESPN Boston calls the best female basketball player in the state. The 5'10" forward, who has already committed to play Division 1 …

Girls' Soccer Makes Early Work of Senior Night

A Smith brace in the first five minutes lead Marauders to 5-1 beat down of Reading.

Two shots, two goals. It was a great start for Belmont High School Girls' Soccer – thanks to a pair of sniper shots by Sophia Eisenbach-Smith (who would end up with a hat trick) in the first five minutes after the opening whistle – Thursday, Oct. 18, as Belmont would go on to win 5-1 against Reading High School under the Harris Field lights against Reading High School. After the Rockets rallied to cut their deficit in half at 2-1, a hard-charging Charlotte Alexander got in front of the Reading's goalies clearing kick which rocketed straight into the net with six minutes remaining in the first half. Alexander and five of her fellow seniors – Maria Alice Manetas, Julia Russo, Alexandra Cellucci, Olivia Lyons and Corrine Ognibene were honored…

Field Hockey Shuts Down, Out Rockets, One Win From Post Season

Marauders revenge earlier lose to Reading as team seeks playoffs.

A fortnight ago, Belmont High School Field Hockey Head Coach Jessica Smith had her doubts that her young team, then with a record of 4-5, could make another visit to the playoffs. "It will be tough, we have to win so many games," said Smith in early October. But in the past two weeks, Smith led her team to a 4-1 run including a 2-0 win over visiting Reading High School Thursday afternoon, Oct. 18, that has the Marauders one win away from returning to the playoffs for the third consecutive year. "This was a huge win," said Smith after the game, praising forward Michele Hayner who had a goal and assisted on the second scored by Catherine Moore. "Michelle continued to lead the play up the field. She took on three defenders to make the assist…

Belmont Girls' Swimming Sinks Reading in Historic Win

Team set to win at least a share of the Middlesex League championship with victory over Stoneham.

The Reading High School Girls' Swimming team has been so dominate in the Middlesex League – nine consecutive league championships – that most teams settle to play second fiddle to the Rockets. But this year, the Belmont High School Girls' Swimming decided they weren't going to dance to the tune Reading was playing for the past decade. With a combination of depth – Belmont dominated the second through fourth places – and swimmers hitting their best times this season, the visiting Marauders came away with a historic victory against a seasoned-Rockets team, 88-82, on Saturday night, Oct. 13, defeating the long-time champions for the first time since 2001. The victory gives the Marauders a clear path to winning the Middlesex League …

Brams Breaks Cross Country Course Record ... Again

Ho hum, another record for freshman harrier.

Three for three. On a perfect afternoon for cross country – a dank and dreary Tuesday, Oct. 9 – freshman harrier Leah Brams toed the start line at Belmont's Clay Pit Pond Cross Country and at the end of the five kilometer (3.1 mile) race, the 9th grader broke her own course record which was 20:04. Running by herself from the start, Brams rocketed away from Belmont's opponent, Reading High School, and finished breaking the 20-minute barrier with a new record of 19:38. Reading's Lucy Armstrong came in second at 20:39 followed by Belmont's Julia Lenef in 20:52 and the Rocket's Sandra Sgori in fourth at 21:19. But the loss to illness of Belmont's solid scorers Lia Aftandilian and Madison Keits hurt the Marauders as Reading took the next five …

Boys' Soccer All Tied Up This Week

Early strike knots up archrival Winchester while Reading's hard work earns a tie.

Belmont High School Boys' Head Coach Peter Guellnitz "loved" how the last goal of the game was scored in Belmont's tussle with Reading: a scrabble in front of the net, a shot that hit the post and a player rushing at the ball and hitting it into the back of the goal off his knee. Just the type of "ugly" goal Guellnitz appreciates. "He just wanted it more then everyone else," said Guellnitz. Unfortuantly, it was Reading's Jackson Conroy who scored with 8 minutes remaining in the game to pull out a 1-1 draw against the Marauders Friday, Sept. 21, at Harris Field. Conroy's effort nullified Ben Giber's rocket of a shot off a rebound the beat Rocket's goalkeep Nathan Terry seven minutes into the second half to give the Marauders the lead.  …

Boys' Hoops in the Playoffs; Girls' Hockey Double Up Rockets

Boys' Hockey losses out to Reading.

The penultimate week of the winter team season found Belmont teams make and end playoffs chances. Boys' D-flect high-flying Rockets to make playoffs Belmont Boys' Basketball came into Friday's, Feb. 10, game against the league-leading Reading Rockets needing a win at home to secure a place in the Division 2 North playoffs. The Marauders, riding a three game winning streak, also came into the rematch – having lost exactly one month previous by seven, 67-60 – with a plan to stymie the Rocket's running offense with an emphasis of putting a body on everyone. How well did the plan work? After seeing Reading push the lead to seven at 22-15 at 3:56 in the second quarter, the Rockets wouldn't score another point until 2:14 left in the third, …
