Watertown's McCarthy Will Not Challenge Brownsberger in State Senate Race

Incumbent will run unopposed in the Sept. 6 Democrat primary.

It appears Belmont's Will Brownsberger will likely cruise to re-election to the State Senate this November after his chief Democrat rival decided to call it quits. Watertown's Robert McCarthy, who finished a strong third to Brownsberger in a special election primary in January, announced on Monday, April 30, that he will not be a candidate for State Senate in the newly-redistricted Second Suffolk and Middlesex district that incompasses Belmont, Watertown and sections of Arlington and Cambridge. Without another Democrat challenger on the horizon, Brownsberger is likely to be unopposed in the September 6 primary. He would then be favorite to win the general election in the heavily-Democrat district. “While undergoing intensive rehabilitation…

Rematch of December's special election as Watertown resident takes out nomination papers.

If both candidates are certified to run by the Secretary of State, McCarthy and Brownsberger will meet in the state Democrat primary on Thursday, Sept. 6. While Belmont-resident Brownsberger beat McCarthy by more than 1,500 votes – 4,958 to 3,436 – as well as two other candidates in a special primary election on Dec. 13 to fill the seat of former Sen. Steve Tolman, McCarthy, who finished third, was seen as splitting the large Watertown vote with popular …

Four Democrats seek to fill the Second Suffolk and Middlesex state senate seat vacated by Steven Tolman. The special preliminary election will be held Tuesday, Dec. 13. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Patch asked all four candidates a set of questions, the same set, to find out more about them. 1 - What areas of the state budget could be altered to make it more efficient, and how? Local aid should be increased — it is an investment in our future while preventing future layoffs and service reductions. After job creation, I think our first order of business is to focus our attention and energies on finding a way to control the continuing and escalating costs of health care. Premiums and procedural costs are strangling both our …

Longtime firefighter and union president will only serve two full terms.

Now there's five. "Senator Steve Tolman, and his brother Warren who preceded him as Senator, both earned reputations as passionate and outspoken advocates for the people in their district," said the Navy veteran who spent more than 30 years as a firefigher.
