Today is primary day in Michigan, when voters mark their ballots with their choice for who should run for president of the United States in November. Republican hopefuls Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum headed into Tuesday's primary race neck and neck, trailed by several other candidates on the GOP ticket. President Barack Obama is the sole candidate on the Democrats' ballot. The Dems will caucus for their candidate May 5. There are some local issues on the ballots, too, such as a school bond proposal in Ferndale and a millage request in Clawson. Newt Gingrich projected to finish in second place.
The Associated Press is projecting Mitt Romney as the winner of Tuesday's Florida Primary, putting him in the pole position for the GOP presidential nomination. The former Massachusetts governor was running ahead in the polls going into the contest. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich was projected to finish in second place. Former U.S. Senator Rick Santorum was projected to finish in third with U.S. Rep. Ron Paul in fourth. Ahead of Tuesday, Gingrich said he intended to continue his campaign for the White House regardless of the outcome of the contest. Patch will have more on this story as it develops.

Audience applauds all four candidates for doing well.
NORTH CHARLESTON, SC — The night belonged to hard-hitting Newt Gingrich and underdog Rick Santorum during the last debate before the South Carolina primary, according to audience members leaving the event Thursday evening. While all four candidates faired well, but many debate-goers said Gingrich and Santorum stole the show And then there was Ron Paul who surprised a few people like Tricia Boccabello of Charleston. "I think Ron Paul did better than I expected him to," Boccabello said. "He actually came across as being pretty cogent." Debbie Jones of Isle of Palms, a former supporter of Texas Gov. TAYLORS-WADE HAMPTON, SC- Just hours after Texas Gov. Rick Perry announced he withdraw as a candidate for the GOP nomination as president, one of his biggest supporters in the Upstate announced that he would support his rival, Mitt Romney. Perry, in his announcement, threw support to former House Speaker Newt Gingrich. But a campaign announcement this evening confirmed that former United States Ambassador to Canada and former Speaker of the House David Wilkins of Greenville would support Mitt Romney for president. Monmouth and Rasmussen polls both show solid leads.
SPRING VALLEY, SC- South Carolina polls have been a rollercoasterthroughout the campaign, but as Primary day inches closer, former Mass. Gov. Mitt Romney may be able to coast to a victory. Two new polls show Romney with more than 10-point leads on former House Speaker Newt Gingrich. One new poll, from Monmouth University, shows Romney with an 11-point lead on his nearest competition. Romney earned 33 percent support among likely Republican primary voters, while Gingrich earned 22 percent. Sen. Rick Santorum and Rep. Former Massachusetts governor declared winner as soon as polls closed.
MANCHESTER, NH- Mitt Romney was declared the winner of the New Hampshire Primary by the Associated Press within minutes of the close of polls Tuesday night. The win for Romney was no surprise, but the speed with which the race was called was. From the moment he entered the race, Romney was seen as the frontrunner in New Hampshire, racking up an impressive list of endorsements and supporters after a second place finish here four years ago.
