The Belmont Studio Cinema will be hosting the US premiere of German film, "The Dead and the Living," Monday, April 15, at 7:30 p.m., part of Belmont World Film's "Found in Translation" annual international film festival. An official selection at the Viennale, the film, by Austrian filmmaker Barbara Albert, concerns a young German woman (Anna Fischer) who embarks on an expedition into her family's past during World War II, setting her on a personal journey that takes her from Berlin to Romania via Vienna and Warsaw and into the abyss of modern European society. Eight films, one month, many languages and cultures under the theme "Found in Translation."
Eight films, one month and many languages and cultures will be presented during Belmont World Film's 12th annual International Film Festival beginning tonight, March 11 and lasting until April 29. Movies from Argentina, Germany, Turkey, Italy and France will be shown at Belmont's Studio Cinema over the next month and a half, including two US premieres. The festival begins tonight at 7:30 p.m. with the New England premiere of "Chinese Takeaway," a 2011 comedy from Argentina about two men thrown together by fate from two very different back-rounds, one Chinese and the other Argentine, both cannot understand each others language. Second annual event will have two screening of really short – 4 to 7 minutes – movies.
It's the Oscars for the really, really short film community as the Second Annual Massachusetts Flash Film Festival is having its screening on Saturday, Oct. 6 at the Studio Cinema on Trapelo Road. Industry judges selected first and second place winners with the overall winners taking home a $500 prize. This year 12 teams will compete for the grand prize. Belmont's newest eatery holds its grand opening today.
Thursday and Friday were suppose to be part of the "quiet" opening for Belmont's newest restaurant, Cafe Burrito, that is adjacent to Belmont's Studio Cinema at 374 Trapelo Rd. But the employees had to close the store early on Thursday when they ran out of food and Friday saw trucks parked outside the Central Square location to urgently restock supplies in the brightly-colored restaurant. "Yesterday and today have really busy," said one of the cafe's employees. Team registration begins Aug. 1 for this unique statewide short film competition: three days to make a movie.
Creating a movie takes time, money and talent. In Belmont this October, filmmakers from across Massachusetts will have to rely on their talent as the Belmont Media Center plays host to second annual Mass Flash Film Festival, the only statewide film competition where emerging video and filmmakers have only 72 hours to write, shoot and edit a four-to-seven minute “Hollywood-style” movie. All teams will have their completed films screened on the big screen at Belmont's Studio Cinema on Saturday Oct. 6.
