Belmont residents partner up in Lexington-based private equity Solamere Capital.
Usually it's the son who follows the father into the family business. But for the Belmont Romney's, it's dad who is joining junior in his shop. South Cottage Road and Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney will likely be sticking around his hometown as he is joining Lexington-based Solamere Capital, the five-year-old private equity firm company started by his eldest son, Tagg who lives on Greensbrook Way. And Mitt will not have to work his way up the corporate ladder; he will serve as chairman of the firm's executive committee where his son is a managing partner, according to reports in the Wall Street Journal and NBC News. Reports said adding the former Massachusetts governor and two-time presidential candidate will be a benefit …

Democrats will hold primary, and a Libertarian candidate has now announced. But still no Republican contender.
While Massachusetts Republicans still appear to be struggling to find a big name candidate to run for the U.S. Senate seat left vacant by John Kerry’s appointment to U.S. Secretary of State, Dan Winslow, a relatively unknown former judge and State Representative from Norfolk, announced today he is forming an exploratory committee for the U.S. Senate seat. In addition to Winslow, an independent contender has jumped into the fray. On Monday, Feb. 4, Beverly Libertarian Daniel Fishman announced he would attempt to get on the ballot for the U.S. Senate special election. Fishman garnered more than 16,000 votes in the 6th Congressional District election last fall finishing third behind Congressman John Tierney and Republican candidate Richard …

Republicans still looking for candidate to run for Kerry’s seat.
OUTSIDE BOSTON, MA -- Tagg will not be ‘it’ this June. Despite a Massachusetts GOP desperate for a high-profile candidate to battle for the U.S. Senate seat left vacant by John Kerry’s elevation to Secretary of State, it will need to find someone not named Romney to take up the challenge. Tagg Romney, the eldest son of former governor and 2012 Presidential Candidate Mitt Romney, released a statement Monday afternoon saying that he will not run for U.S. Senate. "I have been humbled by the outreach I received this weekend encouraging me to become a candidate for the US Senate. I love my home state and admit it would be an honor to represent the citizens of our great Commonwealth,” said the Belmont resident and venture capitalist. “However, I…
With a short bench, state Republicans are hoping to convince another Belmont Romney to take a shot at the US Senate.
OUTSIDE BOSTON, MA -- After two years in the media spotlight as the hometown of a presidential candidate, many in Belmont were happy for "The Town of Homes" to revert back to its previous incarnation of a community of great schools and bad roads. But just when they thought they've seen the last "Romney" lawn sign taken down this past November, some in the state Republican party are trying to pull Belmont back into the center of the hoopla of the next big election. With former US Senator Scott Brown declining to run for the US Senate seat now unoccupied with the resignation of John Kerry who was named the new Secretary of State, the Massachusetts GOP is seeking someone who could make a creditable challenger to either of the democrats – US …

Take this quiz on Tagg Romney, Joe Kennedy III and Jeb Bush.
Political Princes. Heirs Apparent. Scions. America is not a nation of ruling dynasties. Or is it? With talk starting to swirl about Tagg Romney being groomed as a political heir-apparent to his dad, Mitt, we at Patch thought you might like to know a little more about Tagg and the Romneys. But at the same time, it occurred to us you also want to test your knowledge of the other two highest-profile American political dynasty families: the Kennedys and the Bushes. One of those families has a candidate in the running for this fall's election; the other has spoken candidly about his views of how his party is operating. One thing they all have in common: the state of Massachusetts. How, you ask? You have to take our quiz to find out. Test your …

Sherrine and Phillip Thomas join neighbors to cheer Mitt Romney on his big night.
Sherrine and Phillip Thomas were doing what grandparents do best, happy to babysit their youngest grandchildren – the nearly four-month-old twin boys – while their daughter and son-in-law took the oldest grand kids to Florida for a couple days. But the reason for the trip was not a vacation but rather a celebration. And despite being 1,350 miles away, the Thomas' were able to join the nation watching the family in Tampa. The Thomas' are the in-laws of Greensbrook Way's Tagg Romney, Mitt and Ann's oldest son, who is married to Sherrine and Phillips' daughter, Jennifer. And last night, the Thomas' saw Tagg's dad deliver the acceptance speech as the Republican Party's nominee for the US Presidency. Rather then view the speech at their house, …

After hearing concerns, Board will favor single-family homes at Belmont Hill site, for now.
When nearly 70 people show up to attend a Selectmen's meeting in mid-summer, something has caught the attention of Belmont residents. And the overwhelming negative reaction by homeowners of a Belmont Hill neighborhood to word that a out-of-state medical facilities developer was interested in purchasing a town-owned parcel adjacent to Belmont Country Club with access off Greensbrook Way sent a clear message to the Belmont Board of Selectmen at its Wednesday night meeting, Aug. 15. Speakers – including a slew of attorneys and the star power coming from a member of the Romney family – convinced the board to rework a proposed development blueprint favoring single-family homes and expanding the time frame for developers to bid for the 300,000 …

The first part in Patch's The Romney Effect series looks at how Mitt Romney and his family appear on social media.
Mitt Romney's Facebook page states he likes "East of Eden," "O, Brother, Where Art Thou?" and Johnny Cash. But you won't find anything about his hometown of Belmont on his 'likes' list. Does that mean Romney doesn't like Belmont, despite living here for four decades? We can't presume to know, but we know that comments or insights, likes (or even dislikes) about local happenings doesn't appear to be part of the presumptive Republican candidate's social media presence. More than 2.5 million Facebook members 'like' Belmont's most prominent citizen. Or about 10 percent of the 'likes' on Pres. Barack Obama's Facebook page. Social media – Facebook, Twitter, FourSquare, Flickr, Instagram and even newcomer Pinterest – have been considered …

I think Dan Fishman is once again going to surprise many political pundits with how well his message resonates with the disgruntled voters of MA. Especially if the MA Republicans can't get a good candidate, watch out for Dan!   more ›
