Watertown Ends Belmont's Thanksgiving Winning Streak with 28-7

The series is tied up 43-43-5 as Red Raiders stop Marauder's Thanksgiving run.

Watertown ended Belmont's seven-year winning streak in emphatic fashion as the Red Raiders defeated the Marauders, 28-7, at the annual Thanksgiving game held at Belmont's Harris Field, Thursday, Nov. 22.  Watertown's junior T.J. Hairston 21-yard circus catch with a Belmont defender draped on him to score Watertown's final touchdown with 5:01 remaining in the fourth quarter sealed the win for Red Raider's Head Coach John Cacace team. The victory allows Watertown (6-5) to end the season with a winning record for the second year running while Belmont (2-9) struggled through a season where they were away from home for eight games. After 91 games in the series, the record is all square: 43-43-5. Watertown's Cacace said he expected the Marauders…

Our Thanksgiving Traditions

Food, glorious food – and more, as it turns out!

With just two days to go until Thanksgiving, it will come as a surprise to absolutely no one that I found myself standing in a very long line at the grocery store this morning. In fact, the line was long enough for me to overhear the details of another family’s Thanksgiving dinner. “OK,” the woman in front of me said, checking her list for a final time, “we’ve got the Brussels sprouts, the creamed spinach, the stuffed mushrooms ...” “Wait!” her companioned interrupted, “do we have the tossed salad makings?  And enough carrots for the carrot cake?” Brussels sprouts? Creamed spinach? Salad? Carrot cake? These are not the menu items I have ever experienced as part of my family’s traditional Thanksgiving feast. I’ll be honest: except for the …

It's my favorite too! Thanks for this nice piece, Lisa. As long as my mom is cooking, I never want to go anywhere but "home" for Thanksgiving so for my kids that's their tradition. I like Andy's point about ethnic variations, too, since I remember the first time I heard someone mention a Christmas roast and I thought, "What? You don't have homemade ravioli?!"   more ›

'Tom Turkey' Makes Holiday Deposit to Belmont Savings Staff

Why isn't BSB CEO Bob Mahoney ever seen in the same room with "Tom"?

That was no turkey people saw entering the Belmont Savings Bank Monday afternoon, Nov. 20. In fact, that was Belmont Savings' President and CEO Robert Mahoney wearing the over-sized turkey costume.  But this was not a bank promotional gone bad or the long-time banker paying off a losing bet. For the second time in as many years, Mahoney played 'Tom Turkey' delivering fresh holiday birds to bank employees a few days before Thanksgiving. Mahoney – who for the past two years has been in charge at Belmont Savings – made the rounds Monday to each branch office, the backroom operation on Concord Avenue and finally finishing at the main office just before closing, carrying 125 birds around Waltham, Watertown and Belmont for staff to take home.  "…

Thanksgiving is one of the busiest travel time of the year. Whether by plane, train or automobile, traveling can be stressful. Here are some tips to make your trip easier.  Hitting the road? Try these tips: Load up the iPod: Download your kids’ favorite songs and have a sing-a-long as you drive along the road. Plan to make stops: Before you hit the road, map it out and see what interesting sights are along the way. Why not stop and take a picture in front of the World’s Largest Ball of Twine? Or check out the great view of the mountains? This will break up the trip and let the kids have a chance to get up and run around for a little bit. Belmont Spoils Watertown's Re-Homecoming with Turkey Day Win, 19-14 [VIDEO]

Red Raiders can't catch Marauders as Belmont makes it seven in a row on Thanksgiving.

It was not the way Watertown High School football hoped to break in their newly- renovated Victory Field stadium, especially on Thanksgiving. Despite a pair of touchdowns from senior standout Giovanni Ortiz, which included a spectacular 87-yard-kickoff return, Watertown could not break through a resurgent Belmont High School defense, losing 19-14 on a bright and cool Turkey Day Thursday. Belmont (3-8) now holds a 43-42-5 lead in the long-standing rivalry against Watertown (6-5). If there was a single factor that propelled the Marauders to victory, his name was John Dillon. Injured since the preseason, the senior co-captain returned for the Thanksgiving game and demonstrated why the tight end/linebacker was so sorely missed by his teammates…

Angelo's Half Century at The Game

Selectman Firenze will be attending his fifty consecutive Belmont/Watertown Thanksgiving game.

Today at 10:15 a.m., Belmont High School and Watertown High School will meet on the gridiron for the 90th time. And Angelo Firenze has been to more than half of those. Consecutively.  The Belmont High School Class of 1960 graduate has been to every Thanksgiving game since 1961. And his streak would have been longer if he had not visited Italy for a year in 1960. "I started going in 1956," said Firenze, a businessman who is currently a member of the Belmont Board of Selectmen. "It has been a tradition since I was going to High School," he said.  Firenze said going to the games has been a great way of seeing old classmates – many who still live in Belmont – and friends from town. "The games are almost like a social event as much as it's a …
