Special State Senate Election 2012

Asking the Candidates: Tim Schofield

The Brighton attorney discusses his views on some of the issues facing candidates for the Second Suffolk and Middlesex state senate seat.

Four Democrats seek to fill the Second Suffolk and Middlesex state senate seat vacated by Steven Tolman. The special preliminary election will be held Tuesday, Dec. 13. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Patch asked all four candidates a set of questions, the same set, to find out more about them. 1 - What areas of the state budget could be altered to make it more efficient, and how? The Commonwealth regularly faces a budget deficit and has taken numerous steps to reduce waste and reform government. It is now clear, however, that we cannot cut our way out of this economic crisis and we cannot continue to ask working people and the most vulnerable to bear the burden alone. We have to make large corporations and the very wealthy pay …

I am a proud conservative who will be voting for Brownsberger. If nothing else, Mr. Will understands the grave situation surrounding our public pension/health care costs and is trying to do something about it. In my opinion one of the other candidates is a clear Marxist socialist who has no new ideas other than the same old 'soak the rich' class warfare, which has zero chance of ever creating a …   more ›

Boston's Menino Throws His Support to Schofield

Long-time mayor will like put his election machine out for Brighton attorney.

It appears that Robert McCarthy won't get all the high-profile endorsements in the four-way race to be state senator from the Second Suffolk and Middlesex. Boston's Mayor Tom Menino announced today, Dec. 6, that he is backing Brighton Attorney Tim Schofield in next week’s special election to replace former State Senator Steve Tolman up on Beacon Hill. "I’m supporting Tim Schofield for State Senate because he will put people ahead of politics," said Menino in a press release from the Schofield campaign. The endorsement comes days after McCarthy, the former head of the state's professional firefighters union, won the backing of Tolman and former US Rep. Joe Kennedy. "I have always admired the way that Mayor Menino puts people first, and that…

At Tonight's Forum, Candidates Seek to Define Themselves

The final four - Brownsberger, Hecht, McCarthy and Schofield – prepare to address Belmont.

In a race with no incumbent, the four candidates running for the Second Suffolk and Middlesex State Senate seat – who will meet at a Candidate's Forum tonight at the Chenery Middle School at 7:30 p.m. – have split into two groups. Current state representatives Will Brownsberger of Belmont and Jonathan Hecht of Watertown touting their experience on Beacon Hill, and former state firefighters union president Bob McCarthy and Brighton attorney Tim Schofield talking about ways they would shake up things in Senate. The candidates got their first chance to face each other in public last Tuesday night at a candidate forum run and hosted by the Church of the Good Shepherd in Watertown. The district includes all of Watertown and Belmont and parts of…

Senate Candidate Schofield Picks Up Endorsement

Suffolk Assistant DA Lawn backs fellow Brighton resident in Special State Senate primary election.

Sheila Lawn may have been a candidate for just a few days but with connections throughout a state senate district that's up-for-grabs among four contenders, her backing carries some weight. And yesterday, Nov. 16, the Suffolk assistant DA endorsed Tim Schofield in the Dec. 13 special primary election to replace former State Sen. Steve Tolman in the Second Suffolk and Middlesex District.   “Tim Schofield is the right choice for State Senate. He is a person of honesty, character and integrity who will work with dedication and compassion to represent people of all backgrounds in our communities. Tim is a progressive leader who genuinely understands the challenges faced by the elderly, working families, and each and every individual in our …

Hi Julia, the newsletter takes the headline for a particular article on the site and incorporates it into the subject of the email. I can certainly see where it might get confusing, though, so thank you for bringing it to our attention! Just for point of clarification, Patch has not endorsed a candidate.   more ›

Never Mind! Lawn Decides No To Senate Run; Final Four Set

Brighton resident and Suffolk Asst. DA withdraws despite gathering enough signatures.

Although she collected enough signatures and was eligible to appear on a Dec. 13 primary ballot, Brighton resident Sheila Lawn has withdrawn as a contender in the special election to fill a Senate vacancy in the Second Suffolk and Middlesex District, according to the State House News Service today, Tuesday, Nov. 15.  Lawn's exit solidifies the race as an all-Democratic four-way contest among Boston attorney and former candidate for Boston City Council Tim Schofield, former state firefighter union head and Watertown resident Robert McCarthy, Watertown State Rep. Jonathan Hecht and State Rep. William Brownsberger.  Lawn, an assistant district attorney in Suffolk County is the sister of Watertown's other state rep., John Lawn. Clyde Younger, …

Watertown's McCarthy Enters State Senate Race

Longtime firefighter and union president will only serve two full terms.

Now there's five. Robert McCarthy, a 66-year-old Watertown Democrat and longtime president of the state's firefighters union, declared today, Tuesday, Oct. 25, his candidacy for the State Senate in the Second Suffolk and Middlesex Senate District. "Senator Steve Tolman, and his brother Warren who preceded him as Senator, both earned reputations as passionate and outspoken advocates for the people in their district," said the Navy veteran who spent more than 30 years as a firefigher. The Second Suffolk and Middlesex consists of Watertown, Belmont and parts of Cambridge, Allston-Brighton, the Fenway and the Back Bay. The seat was vacated earlier this month when State Senator Steven Tolman resigned to become the president of the Massachusetts…
