Belmont resident talks about his novel before his talk tonight at the Beech Street Center.
“The Leftovers” is the sixth novel of Belmont resident Tom Perrotta. Named one of the best books of 2011 in a number of end-of-the-year lists including being a New York Times Notable book, a Washington Post Notable Fiction Book and one of NPR's 10 Best Novels of 2011, it is the choice for this year’s One Book One Belmont program. Perrotta will read from and talk about The Leftovers, at 7:30 p.m. tonight at the Beech Street Center. Perrotta will be introduced by Belmont author Leah Hager Cohen, whose The Grief of Others was also named a New York Times Notable Book for 2011. A book signing and refreshments will follow the talk, with copies of The Leftovers available for purchase. The Rapture is a state of grace, where individuals are taken …

Belmont resident's novel concerning a Rapture-like event to be feted on Oct. 23.
The Belmont Public Library is pleased to announce that The Leftovers by Belmont author Tom Perrotta has been selected as the featured title for One Book One Belmont 2012, the library’s fourth town-wide reading program. The library and a dozen co-sponsoring community groups invite town residents to read the novel and participate in book discussions and other activities during the months of September and October. The author is scheduled to speak in Belmont on Tuesday evening, Oct. 23. The Leftovers imagines an event called the “Sudden Departure” in which millions of people around the world suddenly disappear with no apparent reason why some people vanish and others remain. How do those left behind carry on? Do they fall apart from grief, …

We want your opinion.
I arrived in Belmont in August 1993, and that would be, um, 18 years as a resident. Yet there are times even today when other residents – whose family have resided in town for a generation or two – will look at me as if I had just got off the boat from Watertown or, gasp, Somerville. The first time I realized that longevity in one place held status and political cache in Belmont was when I attended a contentious public meeting a few years after I arrived on a subject that continues to send residents into a tizzy. After a reasoned statement was made by a person who said he was a "new resident" (uh oh!), an older man rose from his seat, strode over to the microphone and said, "John Belmont, 100 Crummy Street," and then in a loud voice, "A …
With his latest novel, "The Leftovers," in bookstores (and online), the novelist speaks in the 'Times' and 'Onion's' AV Club about Belmont and still being a 'newcomer' in town after 17 years.
It's always exciting when the New York Times runs the dateline: BELMONT (capitalized), Mass., especially so when the story is about someone else then the popular one-time frontrunner for the Republican nomination for president. And in the final week of August, the paper that publishes all the news that's fit to print has been awash in write ups on long-time resident and noted fiction author Tom Perrotta. The extensive coverage coincides with the release of his latest novel, "The Leftovers,"(St. Martin's Press) about a '“Rapturelike phenomenon” in which millions of people (spoiler alert: including Shaq and Adam Sandler) vanish one day, leaving their friends and families unsure how to respond' according to Times' feature writer Gregory …
