Add Your Own: What Is The Object Of Your Affection?

Your significant other, child, pet or favorite food? Share what you love.

The candy hearts, the dinner specials and of course red roses everywhere mean Valentine's Day is in the air. To celebrate with us, share what the object of your affection is this year.   Upload a photo of your favorite something by clicking on the "Upload Photos and Videos" button. It could be a significant other, child or pet. Heck, it could be your first car, favorite vacation spot or that delectable brownie sundae you can't resist. Just show us in pictures what you love. And don't forget to tell us in the caption why it's the object of your affection.

Flowers and Chocolate: Turning Valentine Red into Business Black

Belmont's A Chocolate Dream and Paradise Flowers know Feb. 14th helps the bottom line.

For Belmont florist Christine Haverty, Valentine’s Day is definitely the “Black Friday” for love. More than any day of the year, Feb. 14 is the longest and busiest at Paradise Flowers. “We get a lot of orders for Mother’s Day as well but that occurs over an entire week rather than just one day,” said the owner of the shop on Concord Avenue. A visual and aromatic feast To handle the heavy requests, Christine will extend her hours on Tuesday and keep the shop open all day, from 7:30 a.m. until 8 p.m. She advises that anyone who is planning to purchase an unusual bouquet, insofar as colors or the arrangement, call at least a day in advance to make sure the particular time-tested gift of flora will be exactly right. Contrary to popular belief…

Cooking with Sheila: A Sweet Treat For Your Valentine

When you think of Valentine's Day, one thing comes to mind—chocolate. Try making one of these fudge recipes for your sweetheart.

"Don't wreck a sublime chocolate experience by feeling guilty." ~Lora Brody One of the easiest desserts to make has got to be fudge. I'm not much of a baker, so anytime I can create something good and chocolatey without turning on the oven I'm a happy girl. To this day, the fudge my grandmother used to make remains the best fudge I've ever eaten. I never tried to recreate it because I assumed it was too complicated for a novice like myself. Ironically enough, I recently learned that she found her recipe on the back of a Carnation Evaporated Milk can. Go figure. So here is that great fudge recipe. Create a sweet treat for your Valentine! Basic Chocolate Fudge Ingredients: Directions: Here are some suggestions for other types of fudge: Milk …

Saying 'I Love You' Is In the Cards

Leigh Standley DiBernardo of Belmont Center's Marmalade creates valentines that touch both sender and receiver.

It is likely the very first Valentine Day gift you ever received. They were in small envelopes and placed in a shoe box or on your desk in kindergarten or first grade and you went home to open them. Cards addressed to you with the image of a puppy or a heart, and a message wanting you to be "My Valentine."  Through your life, the Valentine Day card – from that first crush, a good friend or your life-long partner – has been the most recognizable, consistent and eagerly awaited expression of someones love for you on the 14th. This year, nearly 190 million cards will be sent in the US, many created and produced by card giant Hallmark which produced its first valentine 99 years ago.  So you want to pick out the right "one", that perfect …

We prefer Savino's. Il Casale is way too noisy for decent conversation. We also prefer the food at Savino's.   more ›

Town's Cupid: Cushman Plays Valentine All Year Long

The Town Clerk's Office is more than just the trappings of government; it's where lifetimes are made.

For most residents, the Town Clerk's Office located on the first floor of Town Hall is an utilitarian outpost; it is where you come to conduct the everyday official business of government. But for Town Clerk Ellen Cushman, there is one aspect of her position that gives her the most satisfaction: being Belmont's official Cupid. For about 20 times a year, Cushman marries couples. The long-time friends, the recent citizens, those who want to elope, the Coast Guard mates who decided to get married in one of the partner's hometown. "It's the most joyful part of what I do," said Cushman, who has married couples at the front desk, upstairs in front of the fireplace in the Selectmen's Room and up in the Town Hall turret that overlooks the town.  …

Valentine's Day Gift Ideas, Usual and Unique

Crib our gift list, and add your suggestions.

Two years ago, a dear friend sought my advice on what to get his girlfriend for Valentine's Day. His idea? A lamp. Because nothing says I love you quite like a lamp.... Don't get me wrong — I'm all about practical gifts. But when it comes to Valentine's Day, I believe sentiments or surprises should come from the heart, and be about the person you love, not about fulfuling their lighting needs. After a little bit of coaching, my friend settled on a necklace from a local artist. His girlfriend loved the gift, not only because it was pretty, but because it would remind her of him throughout the day, even when they were apart. Remember too, Valentine's Day doesn't have to be about spending a lot of (or any) money. The way to a loved one's …

The Best Love Song Ever Is...

Valentine's Day is approaching, and we're compiling a list of love songs.

It's Valentine's Day, and love is in the air... on the radio, in the coffee shops and maybe on your iPod. You know there's that one song that melts your heart every time you hear it. For me, it's "Over the Rainbow," sung by Israel Kamakawiwo'ole. I don't know what it is, but that song makes stop in my tracks whenever those first notes are played. A colleague of mine and I came up with this list of classic love songs: Is your favorite on our short list? If not, share it in the comments section below.
