Lyons dominate boards as Leinbach cluch late as Marauders perfect at 2-0. Boys' can't get by Red Raiders.
Belmont High School Girls' Basketball Head Coach Melissa Hart remembers losing a close game to Watertown High School last year. It's better to be a the winning side of a close one, said Hart coming off the court Friday, Dec. 14. Led by senior forward and co-captain Olivia Lyons who secured her first double-double this season with 18 points and 13 recorded rebounds, the Marauders' defeated the Red Raiders, 41-34, at Belmont's Wenner Field House in the league opener for both teams which due to the physical nature of the game resembled a wrestling match at times. Hart noted that unlike many games last year when Belmont (2-0) could not come back after falling behind late in matches, the team was able to rally from three down (29-26) at the end…

The series is tied up 43-43-5 as Red Raiders stop Marauder's Thanksgiving run.
Watertown ended Belmont's seven-year winning streak in emphatic fashion as the Red Raiders defeated the Marauders, 28-7, at the annual Thanksgiving game held at Belmont's Harris Field, Thursday, Nov. 22. Watertown's junior T.J. Hairston 21-yard circus catch with a Belmont defender draped on him to score Watertown's final touchdown with 5:01 remaining in the fourth quarter sealed the win for Red Raider's Head Coach John Cacace team. The victory allows Watertown (6-5) to end the season with a winning record for the second year running while Belmont (2-9) struggled through a season where they were away from home for eight games. After 91 games in the series, the record is all square: 43-43-5. Watertown's Cacace said he expected the Marauders…

New course inaugurated with wins by Boys', Girls' over Watertown as frosh harrier impress.
For two years Belmont High School harriers were nomads, left to wander the courses of the Middlesex League as permanent guests to home squads as part of the Marauders' old course became home to the temporary modular classrooms that housed Wellington Elementary School as it's building was being constructed. So it was a special day Thursday, Sept. 13, as Belmont's cross country teams toed the start line against rival Watertown High to race on home ground over a newly-designed course. The teams not only introduced a new course, it was the coming out party for a runner that will begin to turn heads in a very competitive league and in the state. It's already time to call Leah Brams the flying freshman as the 9th grader's first High School race…

Coach Guellnitz tells team that 4-0 loss "only one game" in season.
Everything appeared in place for a good season for Head Coach Peter Guellnitz's Belmont High School Boys' Soccer team in 2012. The team that reached the second round of last year's playoffs – only to loss to archrival Winchester by a single goal – was returning six seniors and playing 10 juniors, many with varsity experience. The moral was good, the team was ready for its away opening game with Watertown ... but. "I sort of knew that the team was just not ready," said Guellnitz. "They have it everywhere but they didn't have it here," he said, tapping to his heart. "And it showed." Under the lights on the new turf field of Victory Field, a big and strong Red Raider team decisively beat the Marauders, 4-0, Wednesday, Sept. 5. "They worked …
Three goals does the job for Paul Graham's Marauders.
Belmont High School Girls' Soccer Head Coach Paul Graham wasn't all that pleased with his team's effort in the first regular game of 2012, but it would have to do. "We'll get better when we start," Graham said in his customary gruff, but lovable, manner. "Well, we better or it's going to be a rough season," he said with a laugh. The Marauders season got underway with a workman win over a young Watertown (0-1-0) team, 3-0, at Belmont's Harris Field Thursday, Sept. 6, scoring three goals that were more functional than things of beauty. Junior Sara Ramsey scored twice in the first half off corners, the first just four minutes into the match followed by another 13 minutes later, while senior Charlotte Alexander's floater eluded the reach of …

Belmont's back line will anchor young team during rebuilding season.
After losing 13 seniors – including midfield stalwart Becca Moore who is playing for Division II Bentley University – from last year's Division II North Sectional finalist, Head Coach Jessica Smith knew this year was going to be a classical "rebuilding" year for Belmont High School Field Hockey. "They're so young so we'll find out how they handle playing together," said Smith a few weeks before during the first practices. And what better test to throw a collection of juniors and sophomores into than the state's most dominate field hockey team in the past five years? Last year's state champions, Watertown High School also lost a number of seniors that defeated Belmont in a memorable Sectional final including three-year star Erika Kelly – …

With freshman goalie, team eases into year with high hopes for post season.
Despite beginning the season with a freshman goalie and missing three starters, Belmont High School Girls' Lacrosse got off to a positive start with a 11-5 win over hosts Watertown (1-1-0) on the new turf surface of Victory Field on a brilliant and cool Friday afternoon, March 30. "We started off with a win which is great," said Belmont Head Coach Jessica Smith, noting that her team (1-0-0) was surprised how improved Watertown was from last year. After taking 6-2 lead at half time – led by senior Erin O'Donovan's three goals – Watertown played a disciplined, control game and scored twice to cut the lead to two, 6-4, before Belmont scored a pair themselves, with senior Caroline McCarthy netting one of her three goals to increase it to 8-4 …

Senior center's true hat trick including tying goal with 14 seconds left in the game.
After scoring what appeared to be yet another heart-crushing goal in her career against Belmont Monday afternoon, Watertown senior forward Erika Kelly began shimmying her shoulders as she skated by her friends at Watertown's Ryan Skating Rink, a gesture that confirmed the belief that Watertown would once again beat their arch rivals. What Kelly and her Watertown teammates were not counting on was Belmont senior center Caroline McCarthy performing her own bit of magic by producing a hat trick out of thin air. Capping a wild third period comeback, McCarthy scored her final of three consecutive goals with 14 seconds remaining and securing a 3-3 tie against one of only three teams that have defeated Belmont this season. This is the second …
