The Belmont Planning Board OKs Cushing Village massing and height which the Planning Board calls a "milestone" while the developer believes he can begin construction "this summer." At an earlier Planning Board meeting, the Wellington School Building Committee receive its final occupancy notice after it made efforts to quiet the noise coming from the building that was effecting the quality of life of a handful of homeowners. Former state trooper from Belmont was convicted of extortion in threats he made to a local bookie. Events that occurred in Belmont in the past week.
The first two nights of the annual Belmont Town Meeting took place Monday as the yearly gathering of Belmont's legislative body approved new powers for the Town Administrator and increasing the number of restaurant liquor licenses and stores that can sell alcohol while on the second night the Town Meeting voted to approve the nine projects being funded by the town's Community Preservation Committee. The Demolition Delay Article will not be heard until June as questions to the wording and structure of the by-law forced the delay. Belmont's Town Administrator David Kale has been hospitalized with a "serious" acute illness that has forced time to be away from Town Hall. The week was dominated by the explosions that killed spectators at the Marathon and then the subsequence gun battle, stay in place order then the arrest of final suspect.
There was only story this week: The bombings on the finish line of the Boston Marathon and the subsequent gun battle, search. lock down and capture of a suspect in the bombings in neighboring Watertown. It started Monday with twin explosions at the finish line of the Boston Marathon which was reported extensively on social media . Just about half of the two dozen Belmont runners reported finishing the race as the race was halted after the bombs went off. While the bombs killed three and injured hundreds, the terror events won't stop one Belmont runner from participating in next year's Marathon while another provided a first-person's viewpoint of being in the race and being stopped just short of the finish line. The Belmont Board of Selectmen voted to recommend a renovation of the historic Underwood Pool that does not include a much needed playing field for the High School, damaging the prospects of new library in town. Supporters of the library now are pushing forward on a plan to place the field at the former incinerator site. Belmont's Selectmen put their signatures on a document indicating the town's interest in working with the state on financing and constructing a new High School. The project, with a projected price tag of $75 million, would renovate the building and add a new science wing. In the only competitive race in the year's annual Town Election, first-time candidate Elyse Shuster and incumbent Laurie Slap won seats on the Belmont School Committee, receiving the identical number of votes to beat back a strong challenge from 21-year-old Belmont High grad and MIT senior Jamie Kang. Shuster, Belmont's newly elected School Committee member, said she will focus on a wide range of areas including the search for a new superintendent. Belmont Police apprehended a suspect from Watertwon connected with home break-ins throughout the region. The Belmont School Committee approved an updated "Statement of Interest" to the state for the renovation of the more than 40-year-old Belmont High School which would come with a price tag of between $90 to $100 million. The Foundation for Belmont Education smashed its previous fundraising total for its annual Spring Auction and Dance by raising more than $45,000. The Belmont High School Girls' Basketball teams playoff run ended with a loss to North Andover Tuesday night in the Division 2 Sectional semifinals. The team – which went to the playoffs for the first time in five years – finished the year 13-10. A surprise March snow storm dumped about a foot of snow on Belmont but schools remained open and there was no town-wide snow emergency. In an attempt to find alternative funding sources, Belmont School Superintendent Thomas Kingston told the Capital Budget Committee that he and School Committee chair Laurie Graham would be seeking business support to lay out a new $165,000 basketball court/gym floor at Belmont High. The Belmont School District could see up to $500,000 in federal grants cut if the federal government's budget sequester continues into the new fiscal year beginning July 1, according to School Superintendent Thomas Kingston, making an already possible "dire" budget process even more so. The town could also see reductions in money for public safety and transportation but those would be harder to predict as those federal monies are funneled through the state, said Town Administrator David Kale.
