Additional money despite claims by committee that oversaw Willington's construction that building is within town noise bylaw.
Just how much should Belmont spend to be quiet? The answer could come to a vote at the annual Town Meeting this June whether the town should spend upwards of $500,000 or more to mitigate noise coming from the roof top heating and cooling equipment at the Wellington Elementary School. That was the upshot from the most recent Belmont Planning Board meeting held Dec. 11 where the Wellington School Building Committee updated the board on their latest attempts to alleviate the noise emanating from large roof compressors on the Orchard Street-side of the school. The work is the aftermath of numerous complaints heard earlier this year by the Planning Board from a handful of residents living adjacent to the town's newest municipal building who …

School Building Committee adding $150K to effort but state building meets town/state standards.
The Wellington School Building Committee wants to know the answer to one question: Just what is quiet enough? The group which oversaw the year-and-a-half long construction of the $30 million school located between Orchard and School streets has been asking that question since last winter when they first sat down with a group of homeowners a few months after the Wellington opened its doors in September. The residents – between one and two dozen – contend the school's opening has corresponded to a level of sound coming from the building's roof top HVAC system that has prevented many from obtaining a good nights sleep since it was powered up last summer. And before the Belmont Planning Board at its Wednesday, June 27 meeting, the Building …

Special Town Meeting warrant opens Wednesday, Oct. 19, closing on Friday, Nov. 4.
Wellington School Building Committee members Joseph Barrell and Mike Healy met with the Belmont Board of Selectmen to provide a project and financial update. “I’m grateful to be part of this,” said Barrell in reference to the smooth opening of the school and how well the construction schedule has run. “There are a lot of loose ends we need to accomplish but it’s happening,” he said, explaining that the modular units at Belmont High School are scheduled to be demolished and removed before it snows; the contractor is still finishing landscape work on the east side of Orchard Street; and that work continues on the roof screen and the two entrances. “We still meet with the contractor every Monday afternoon to review the work he is doing that …

Wellington Building Committee votes 4-3 to move to meet scheduled first day of school. Final vote by School Committee tonight.
After a two-hour meeting with town officials, construction teams and the architect Tuesday night, the Wellington School Building Committee voted by the narrowest of margins to go forward with the opening of the $40 million school on Sept. 7, the first day of school. In the 4-3 vote, with School Committee Chairwoman Laurie Graham abstaining, the majority believe the school has reached a level of significant substantial completion to move forward. The Building Committee's recommendation now goes to the Belmont School Committee, who meets tonight, Wednesday, Aug. 10, for a final vote whether to accept the recommendation. Patricia Brusch, the committee's vice-chairwoman, said that even if the Building Committee had voted to delay the opening …
