The National Weather Service has issued a strong wind advisory for Belmont and the rest of the state beginning at 4 p.m. and remain in effect until Wednesday morning. Strong steady winds will sweep into Belmont by 8 p.m. and last until just before daybreak. Residents can expect strong and possibly damaging winds with gusts from the South reaching 45 to 55 mph. The stongest winds will be at higher elevations such as the top of Belmont Hill and near south facing coastal areas. Solar flares at 4 million mph and winds of up to 50 mph will buffet Belmont.
Today, not only will residents have to secure those pesky garbage cans, they may want to question their GPS when it says their destination is located five minutes away in the middle of the Charles River. An unusually active solar flair, the largest in five years, is sending charged particles at four million mph racing to the earth with a possibility that it could disrupt power grids and impact GPS satellites. According to the Space Weather Prediction Center, the sun erupted Tuesday and the effects will be felt beginning in the early morning hours of today and lasting through Friday morning. Belmont and much of New England is under a wind advisory today in anticipation of 20 to 25 mph winds and possible gusts as strong as 50 mph.
Keep an eye on wandering garbage barrels, falling tree limbs and down power wires while you are out and about today. These are all possibilities as the National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory for all of southern New England, including Belmont, that began at 4 a.m. this morning and remaining in effect until 4 p.m. this afternoon in anticipation of possible "damaging winds."
