Three! Final Second Shot Propel Boys' Hoops to OT Win

Marauders take down league-leaders Woburn in epic comeback on Tanner's court.

Sometimes prayers are answered. Senior forward Jay Mulani's three-point Hail Mary with less than two seconds remaining in the game allowed Belmont (1-9) to romp by a surprised Woburn High team (6-4) in overtime to secure their first win of the season, 64-57, at Woburn. Mulani's shot, which banked off the backboard from an tight angle, knotted up Tuesday night's game against the Middlesex League leading Tanners at 53 at the end of regulation. "We were looking for them to foul Jay," said Assistant and JV Coach Tim Stratford. "When it went in, the kids went nuts," said Stratford. In the extra stanza, Belmont youngsters – freshmen guard Matt Kerans (16 points) and center Adam Kleckner (who led the Marauders with 22 points) – and senior captain…

Girls' Soccer Bust Out Against Woburn

Third consecutive shutout as scorers come out of hiding to bag five vs Tanners.

Belmont High Girls' Soccer Head Coach Paul Graham said all his team had to do was heed his advice. "I kept telling them to go to the outside," he said at halftime of the match with Woburn High School under the lights at Harris Field on Monday, Sept. 24. He noted that of Belmont's four goals in the first 40 minutes, all came from plays that began from the wings. "All they had to do was listen to me," he said. And for the first time this season, Belmont's scorers came out of hiding to strike for a five-spot while senior goaltender Maria-Alice Manetas pitched a third consecutive shut out as the Marauders have risen to 5-2-0 in the Middlesex League Big School Division with their 5-0 victory. After its own shocking 4-2 loss to Arlington earlier…

Belmont's Swimmers (And Diver) Power Pass Woburn

Very young team appear set to make a splash in league and in the state.

They're young, talented and appear ready to make a splash in the pools around the state. Belmont High School Girls Swim team won going away against Woburn High Friday, Sept. 14, at Belmont's pool, hitting 91 points (which secures a swim meet win) with the final relay still to be swam. "The girls really stepped up today," said Ev Crosscup, long-time Belmont head coach. "We had to make several changes (to which event certain swimmers would do) because Woburn certainly provided a nice challenge for us. I couldn't be more proud how they met that challenge." Crossup point to Taylor Coutinho (1st in the 100 yard breast stroke in 1:16.81) who was switched to the breast stroke and came out with her best time that qualified her for the state meet …

Behind Goalie's Best, Girls' Lacrosse Stall Woburn, 8-7

Marauders do enough to beat Tanners at home.

One parent said his daughter was talking so much about the next day's prom "that it's no wonder that this game is so close." And Belmont High School Girls' Lacrosse team needed a stellar solo goal from a senior captain, the best performance of the year from its first year goalie and a game of keep-away for the final five minutes of the game to secure an 8-7 win over Woburn High School, giving the Marauders' it's ninth victory of the year and providing a happy prelude to prom. Belmont went up 6-3 in the first half, in large part from the play of first-year goalie Linda Herlihy, who stopped six Tanner shots as seniors Britta Marden, Caroline McCarthy and Izzy Goldstein each pocketed a pair of goals. Woburn came out for the second 25 minutes …

Woburn Hoops Sneak by Belmont's Boys', Girls'

Tanners' Littleton is big in OT as Woburn's Girls out muscle Marauders in tight Friday game.

It was an unlucky Friday, the 13th, for Belmont Hoopsters as the Woburn High School Boys' and Girls' Basketball teams left town with wins as the Tanners squeezed past the Marauders in the final minutes of each game.  Littleton skies high in OT Woburn senior Matt Littleton score 8 of his game high 26 points in overtime, all while playing with four fouls, to lead Woburn (6-4) over host Belmont (5-4) Friday night, 70-65, as the Marauders could not comeback after being torched by 13 Tanner three pointers. Littleton hit two shots and four free throws in a two minute stretch after Belmont cut a 15-point, second half Tanner lead as Marauder John Dillon (who led Belmont with 21 points) scored three consecutive baskets to push the home team to a 59…

Belmont Girls' Hockey Downs No. 1 Woburn, 3-2

Juniors Goaltender Megan Foley, forward Alexandra Cellucci standout for 7-2 Marauders.

A pair of goals by junior forward Alexandra Cellucci and an outstanding game by junior goaltender Megan Foley propelled Belmont Girls' Hockey to its biggest win in years as they dominated consensus No. 1 Woburn Tanners, 3-2, at Belmont's Skip Viglirolo Skating Rink Saturday afternoon, Jan. 14. Belmont's defense, led by Foley playing her best game in the past two season as a starter, deadened Woburn's superior straight line speed while the Marauders' passing game never allowed the Tanners to establish a sustained attack as it was forced to play large portions of the game in their defensive zone. Woburn – ranked No. 1 by both the Boston Globe and Hockey Night in Boston – scored first when junior Kayla Smith poked in a shot from fellow junior…

Boys' Soccer Comes Back to Tie Woburn 2-2

Trailing 2-1 at the half, the Marauders' Brags puts home equalizer with less than 10 minutes remaining.

The Belmont High boys’ soccer team tied Woburn 2-2 Monday evening, in what was a hard fought and exciting game between two teams looking to establish themselves near the top of the crowded Middlesex League standings. The visiting Tanners, now 3-1-3, took it to Belmont in the early going. Just three minutes in, Woburn sweeper Bobby Campbell found teammate Gavin Wilson for a header on a set piece from about 35 yards out, and Wilson angled the ball inside the far post for a 1-0 lead. After Belmont’s Michael Chertkov scored after colliding with Woburn goalkeeper Andrew Deane just four minutes later, Woburn striker Valerio Silva used his speed to track down a ball and poke it past Belmont goalie Jeremy Lockett right before the half for a 2-1 …
