Belmont resident and children escaped SUV before the vehicle was hit by a train.
The decision of a Belmont driver to follow directions from her GPS device sent her and her two young children onto the MBTA commuter rail tracks and into the path of a Fitchburg/South Action train last night, Tuesday, June 18, according to the MBTA Transit Police. Once she realized she had taken a wrong turn at the Brighton Street railroad crossing and could not turn the vehicle, she exited the SUV with her children and were at a safe distance when the vehicle was struck by the outbound train a few minutes after 9 p.m. MBTA and Belmont Police along with Belmont Fire and EMS arrived at the scene to find the vehicle on the tracks with substantial damage and the train stopped. There was approximately 70 passengers on board the train and the …

No injures in Tuesday night mishap. A question of the GPS?
A vehicle driven by a woman somehow drove onto the commuter rail tracks at the Brighton Street crossing and was struck by a MBTA commuter rail train at approximately 9:24 p.m. Tuesday, June 18, according to Belmont Police. While the facts were sketchy as of 1 a.m. as the accident was still under investigation, Belmont Police Sgt. David Sullivan, the night shift supervisor told Belmont Patch that no one in the vehicle was injured in the collision. "All I can say now is that a woman drove down the tracks and was hit. But she got out before it happened.," said Sgt. Sullivan. It was unknown where the vehicle's driver was from or the make of the vehicle. The night's rain that soaked the region had not yet come when the accident happened. While…

Incidents and emergencies handled by the Belmont Fire Department.
Putting out the fire (alarm) June 11 – Three-quarters past midnight, Engine 1 was sent to a residence on Maple Terrace for a smoke detector going crazy. But just where was it? The Belmont Police were also on scene and they finally located the sounding detector in a garbage can. The officer removed the battery and the directed firefighters to an alley next door on Maple Terrace where they found several discarded smoke detectors that were placed in a recycle bin. Thankfully, no other detectors were sounding on the street. Trapelo Road gas attack June 11 – At a minute before noon, fire units were sent to a location along 400 Trapelo Rd. for a natural gas leak. The odor could be detected on the sidewalk near an underground valve box. The gas …

Citations and awards for several members including a special recognition for those who answered the call in Watertown.
The award ceremony conducted for the Belmont Police and Fire departments that was held Wednesday, June 12 at the Beech Street Center, was to honor work conducted by the town's public safety employees through 2012. There was, however, "an incident that was so unheralded in the world of law enforcement that the awards committee felt ... those officers who responded deserved to be formally recognized tonight," said Belmont Police Assistant Chief James MacIsaacs. So at Wednesday's ceremony, Belmont Police Lt. Christopher Donahue and officers William McDermott, Matthew Benoit, Matthew Stewart and Alex Cheung were honored with a Letter of Recognition for arriving to "an unimaginable scene" in the area of Dexter Avenue and Laurel Street in …

Incidents and emergencies handled by the Belmont Fire Department.
Baby left in car during heatwave June 2 – Just before 2:30 p.m., with temperatures reaching into the low 90s, the crew from Engine 1 was dispatched to a Belmont Street location for a reported baby locked in a car. The mom said she accidentally locked her child in her vehicle with her keys for approximately 10 to 15 minutes prior to its arrival. The crew immediately gained access to the vehicle and the mother was reunited with her son. Thankfully, the temperature inside of the vehicle was not overly hot and the child was conscious and while crying, he was sweating (which is good), cool to the touch and pink in color. After several minutes in mother's arms, the baby appeared to be comforted and aware of his surroundings. While the mother did…

Incidents and emergencies handled by the Belmont Fire Department.
It was just a little smoke May 27 – Just after half past 11 a.m., the entire Belmont Fire Department was sent scrambling to the tallest building in town, the residential block on Trapelo Road in Cushing Square, after some unknown party tripped the fire alarm. Crews from Engine 1 and Rescue 1 investigated and they reported that a hallway smoke detector was going off on the sixth floor. Up there, there was, in fact, a light smoke condition coming from an apartment – along with the tenant. Turns out that the woman didn't take good care watching the pots and pans during the food preparation process: food in one container began burning. At noon, the fire alarm system and master box were reset and everyone was sent home. Turns out that the …

Incident and emergencies handled by the Belmont Fire Department.
Steam heat May 13 – At little after half past 2 p.m., all equipment in the Belmont Fire Department arsenal was sent to the tall condo building in Cushing Square for reports that smoke was emulating from the structure. But it turns out that the white cloud coming from the ground floor vent was actually steam. Going ... nowhere May 14 – Just before 4 p.m., fire crews were sent to the Town Hall complex for an incident in the Homer Building: that would be the structure with all the town offices located on Moore Street. Turns out they were there to help a person (or persons) stuck in the elevator. Happily, everyone got out without incident. The elevator was shut down and handed over to town officials and a technician from Associated Elevator …

Incidents and emergencies handled by the Belmont Fire Department.
Yes, it does smell like gas May 5 – A few minutes after noon, Engine 2 headed to a location on Carleton Road to investigate the outside odor of natural gas. And, yes, there was a faint odor detected in the air so the gas company was asked to respond. Thankfully there was no inside odor and normal readings were displayed by the fire department's detection equipment in nearby residences. Plug it in May 5 – A quarter past 6 p.m., Engine 1 and Rescue 1 were dispatched to a condo complex on Lexington Street after the carbon monoxide alarm went off. The homeowner who made the call met with companies outside. The Rescue personnel performed a quick medical assessment while the crew from Engine 1 checked the interior. After detection equipment …

I second Courtney's comment. It still amazes me how you cannot tell the difference. The RMV needs to do a reevaluation of her driving abilities. Will she have to pay the costs of repair to the tracks and train?   more ›
