Belmont Fire Log: Cooking the Checks

Incidents and emergencies handled by the Belmont Fire Department.

Snow trippin' Feb. 11 – At 1:40 p.m., Engine 1 was sent to the corner of Bradley Road and Gordon Terrace because a fire alarm street box had been "tripped" – someone had pulled the alarm. Upon investigation it was determined that a resident shoveling snow very close to the box somehow hit it with his shovel or the snow. When the department tested the box, the fire alarm was working slow. The crew made a temporary fix for the street box while calling the Belmont Municipal Light Department to take a look at town equipment.  What do you serve with a bank draft? Feb. 11 – About a quarter to midnight, fire personnel rushed to a Gilbert Road two-family house for a reported building on fire. When they arrived, the occupant had just used a fire …

Belmont Fire Log: Snow-Covered Vent Sends Home CO Level Sky High

Incidents and accidents handled by the Belmont Fire Department.

Alarms would have helped Feb. 6 – Eleven minutes past 3 p.m., every piece of fire equipment was sent a two-family on Pleasant Street for smoke inside the building. Crews from Engine 2 and Ladder 1 arrived to find the property owner who told the firefighters he smelled smoke while visiting the unoccupied townhouse. He opened the door for the crews where Engine 2 reported a cooking fire confined to the stove top and smoke filling the first floor which Engine 2 personnel extinguished. In addition to leaving food cooking while away, the tenant's apartment didn't have smoke or CO detectors. The property owner was told it would be best to place the devices throughout the townhouse.  Gas on the menu Feb. 7 – Engine 1 took off a little past 9 a.m…

Belmont Fire Log: CO Detector Too Old To Do The Job

Incidents and emergencies handled by the Belmont Fire Department.

Gas on the street Jan. 29 – Fire personnel arrived on a location on Horace Road a quarter past 1 p.m. for a gas leak on the street. National Grid arrived to fix the problem. Out of date Jan. 29 – A homeowner on Harvard Drive called Belmont Fire at 3:37 p.m. after the alarm of a new carbon monoxide detector began going off. The crew from Engine 1 could not find any elevated levels of gas. Further investigation discovered that the CO detector was manufactured in 2005 and past its effective date. The homeowner was told to purchase a new CO detector but make sure the unit is not more than half-a-decade old. Who doesn't love the "Big Easy"? Jan. 30 – At a quarter past 3 p.m. (that is 15:15 using the 24-hour clock), Engine 1 was sent to a …

Belmont Fire To Upgrade Ambulance Service

Department to take over Advanced Life Support services.

In a move that will provide Belmont residents with better medical care while adding to town coffers, the Belmont Board of Selectmen approved a Belmont Fire Department proposal Monday, Jan. 28, for the department's ambulance crews to provide Advanced Life Support services beginning in July. Not only will residents who are injured or suffer from a serious medical condition receive quicker and greater care from Belmont Fire, Belmont Fire Department Chief David Frizzell said that projected revenues calculated by a study committee predicted that not only will the town's bottom line benefit from added fees, the service will pay for a new town ambulance in five years without digging into the town's Capital Budget.  The town's Fire Department …

Belmont Fire Log: 'Go Away!'

Incidents and accidents handled by the Belmont Fire Department.

You're not coming in Jan. 23 – Just before 2 p.m., Engine 2 was sent to Spinney Terrace for a possible medical emergency. When firefighters approached the front door, the homeowner came to window by the front door, but would not allow the company to enter. "She appeared untrustful and leery of our presence outside her home," read the incident report. And due to what appeared to be the resident's poor hearing, the crew was unable to communicate effectively to her through the window nor could she hear the phone ringing when the fire dispatcher called. Finally, a helpful neighbor told firefighters the homeowner had accidentally activated her Lifeline personnel alarm in the past and wouldn't allow responders enter her house at that time. Since…

Incidents and emergencies handled by the Belmont Fire Department.

Outside smells Jan. 13 – A dozen minutes after midnight, Engine 1 was sent to the corner of Grove Street and Unity Avenue to investigate a reported outside odor of gas in the area. The fire companies soon located the leak in a burner on the stove in the kitchen where gas readings were elevated. The crews turned off the stove and ventilated after a burner. The fire personnel that arrived shut off the offending stove by switching off the circuit breaker. Outside, not inside Jan. 3 – It was an early-morning call to lower Common Street when a resident discovered that they had locked themselves out of their own house.
