Scordino and Dalby win along with the Lighting Design for PAC's "Grease" at the first ever MET Musical Awards.
Paraphrasing the Godfather of Soul, James Brown, it was a man's world for Belmont High School's Performing Arts Company production of the Broadway hit musical "Grease" as the two male leads won their respective categories as Belmont won a total of three awards at the inaugural Massachusetts Educatoral Theater Guild's Musical Awards held Tuesday, June 11 at Boston's Paramount Theatre. John Robert Scordino as Danny Zuko won for Best Lead Actor and Henry Dalby as Teen Angel for Best Featured Actor in this year's Spring Musical directed by Chris Brindley. In addition, Belmont High won for Best Lighting Design led by Chris Fournier. The Paramount audience got to see a portion of the BHS PAC award-winning production as David Green and Pauline …

First step in four year, $450,000 Innovative Teaching Initiative, a collaboration between schools and Foundation for Belmont Education.
The first tentative steps to bring personal technology into the classroom begins today, Monday, June 10, as parents of Chenery Middle School 8th graders will be updated on the iPad program their children will undertake on their first day at Belmont High School in September. The pilot program, a partnership between the School District and the Foundation for Belmont Education dubbed the Innovative Teaching Initiative, will allow Belmont teachers begin applying new teaching techniques to motivate and engage students to prepare for education and the workplace in the 21st century, said Dr. Thomas Kingston, Belmont's school superintendent at a recent Belmont School Committee meeting. "This is not a substitute for learning but bringing in a tool…

Given to student with a love of language and literature.
The annual presentation of the Denis Fitzpatrick Book Award, is given in memory of Fitzpatrick, the director of English in the Belmont Schools for 15 years and assistant superintendent for the last two years of his time at Belmont. In recognition of his love of language and literature, the department is pleased to honor senior Deven Desai with the award and a copy of one of Fitzpatrick’s favorite books, Stephen King’s memoir of the craft, "On Writing." According to his teacher, Mark Reynolds; "Personable and punctual, Deven is an excellent student who, in the words of Marge Piercy, 'jumps into work head first'and does 'what has to be done, again and again.' He is interested in ideas and wonders not only how they apply to the texts we’…

Four errors and a wily lefty allowed Danvers the opening to defeat the Marauders, 6-0, in the semifinals.
Belmont High School Baseball Head Coach Jim Brown was dejected as he packed his equipment last night. "We couldn't commit errors especially against a good team and a pitcher like that," said Brown. Four errors, mental mistakes and a ten-win pitcher on his game resulted in a 6-0 defeat to Danvers High School in the MIAA Division 2 North Semifinals played at Lynn's Alumni Field Thursday, June 6. "It was just a bad time to play our worse game in a while," said Brown. The Falcons' junior pitching phenom Brandon Hyde threw a complete game shut out using a deadly-accurate low sweeping pitch that his head coach, Roger Day, said "never broke 70 m.p.h. once in the game." But what the 10-0 pitcher lacked in speed he made up in hitting his mark with…
More than 100 scholarships, awards and recognitions for the Class of 2013.
It was another extraordinary class of graduates from Belmont High School as the Class of 2013 sat on stage of the school's auditorium – a reversal of tradition of when the students would sit as the audience – for the annual Senior Awards presentation on Friday, May 31. Belmont High Principal Dan Richards said he made the change in the seating arrangement to "put the spotlight on the students" who were receiving recognition for outstanding achievement in academics, athletics and civic involvement in their senior and through their time in the High School. See all the honorees in the pdf file attached to this Web site. Known for its academic rigor, one in ten of Belmont's graduating seniors scored a perfect 800 in one or more of the SAT …

Junior hurler Brendan Shea takes to mound vs. second seed Danvers in Div. 2 North clash.
Junior Brendan Shea will attempt to recapture the pitching magic he conjured up against Beverly High six days ago under the lights tonight in Lowell as he leads his Belmont High School teammates against favorites Danvers High School in the semi-finals of the Division 2 North Sectionals. The game will start at Alumni Field in Lowell at 7 p.m. Directions are below. Shea threw a 11 strikeout, two-hit opening-round gem against the host Panthers as the Marauders scored the only two runs in the game playing its brand of "small ball." "We're not going to change the way we've been playing all year. We don't play the opponent but the situation," said Belmont's Head Coach Jim Brown. The semifinals is the farthest Belmont (13-9) has come in the …

Marauders to play semi-finals vs. second-seed Danvers at Lowell tomorrow, Thursday, June 6, at 7 p.m.
Senior Mike Richardson left a lasting memory in his final start at Brendan Grant Field on Tuesday, June 4. Belmont first four batters scored and Richardson had nine strikeouts in a complete game three-hitter as the 11th-seed Marauders defeated Wayland High School, 8-1, in the quarterfinals of the MIAA Division 2 North Sectionals held on Belmont's home field. Richardson helped his own cause by going 3-4 with the bat driving in four runs as Belmont's first four batters scored to put the game away early. Belmont (13-9) will meet second-ranked (and the highest seed still remaining) Danvers High School (18-2) tomorrow night, Thursday, June 6, at 7 p.m. at Alumni Field in Lowell in the semifinals. So far in the playoffs, Belmont's pitching duo …

Head Coach Jim Brown's "resilient" team prepares to reduce "boo-boos" against Wayland.
For much of the season, Belmont High School Head Baseball Coach Jim Brown was hoping he could position his senior-laden team with an opportunity to return to the state championship playoffs. He really wasn't expecting to be playing the quarterfinal round of the Division 2 North Sectional finals against fellow upstart Wayland High School at the friendly confines of Belmont's Brendan Grant Field. For Brown and his team, after upsetting the sixth-ranked Beverly High Panther ("An amazing win," said Brown) on Friday, May 31, hosting a round of the playoffs at home is "a huge thing." "One, you don't have to travel and two, we had a lot of fans in Beverly so this place is going to be packed and nothing beats that," said Brown, who is also the …

More than 120 volunteers, along with Woody, Buzz, Rex, Hamm and Jessie, made the night one to remember.
When Alex Griffen entered the main hallway just outside the cafeteria just after the doors for Belmont High School's Annual All-Night Party opened at 9 p.m., the senior produced a big grin when he recognized this year's theme. "This is pretty cool," he said. "I had to look around and then I was them," he said. The "them" he was referring to was Woody and Buzz Lightyear. A Toy Story – the 1995 computer-animated family buddy comedy film produced by Pixar – was this year's theme, with all the favorite characters, according to Theresa Normile who this year led the more than 120 volunteers, most parents of high school juniors, to put on the yearly after-graduation event. Normile, who attended her "All Night Graduation Party" at Belmont High…

Quarterfinal game rescheduled for tomorrow, Tuesday, June 4, at 3:30 p.m.
Fans of Belmont High School Baseball will need to wait one extra day to see the Marauders play for their first home playoff game since 2010 as the quarterfinal game against Wayland High School has been called due to the rain and wet conditions at Belmont's Brandan Grant Field. The Marauders will start senior Mike Richardson versus the 8-12 Warriors which upset Burlington High School, 5-4, in extra innings on Friday. Belmont (12-9) reached the quarterfinals by downing host Beverly High School on Friday, 2-0, on an epic pitching performance by junior Branden Shea who threw a perfect game through four and a no-hitter for 5 1/3.
