John Analetto was seeking to be released before extortion trial.
John Analetto, the Belmont resident who was arrested more than a year ago for extortion and threatening to kill a local bookie, will not be let out of jail before this trial after a judge noted that Analetto's own psychiatrist had "reservations" about him being released out into the public. Analetto, who was suspended without pay as a Massachusetts State Police officer since his Dec. 31, 2011 arrest, was denied his request to be released as Judge George A O’Toole, Jr. ordered him detained until his trial, according to an article in the Boston Herald. Belmont resident and former Massachusetts State Trooper John Analetto was formally indicted on two criminal counts of extortion by a grand jury in US District Court in Boston Wednesday. Analetto was arrested Dec. 31 by a State Police SWAT team just off Trapelo Road after a long-time bookie – known in court documents as "John Doe A" – asked the FBI for help after Analetto began treatening to kill the gambler and sought to muscle in on his large number of East Coast clients. Assistant US Attorney Eugenia Carris said that Analetto extorted the bookie "to collect and attempt to collect an extension on credit" in violation of federal law. The Massachusetts State Police today, Jan. 3, suspended lifelong Belmont resident John Analetto after his arrest Saturday, Dec. 31, by the FBI for extorting money from an bookmaker. In a statement, Mass State Police Superintendent Col. Marian McGovern said that Analetto's actions noted in an affidivat released today in Federal District Court were the "actions of a criminal and street thug." “Beginning last week, the Massachusetts State Police joined the FBI in an investigation into bookmaking and extortion crimes committed by John Analetto, a state trooper.
