If you're looking for coffee and the paper in Belmont today, Thanksgiving Day, you're in luck. While today is a national holiday – one of ten holidays recognized by the federal government – and most businesses (including Shaw's Supermarket) along with federal, state and town offices are shut, there are a few places where you can get away from the hustle and bustle of the kitchen or pick up a coffee before the annual Belmont/Watertown football game at Harris Field at 10:15 this morning. • Ohlin's Bakery, 456 Common St. 6 a.m. to noon. While many of us will be at work, government offices and schools are closed.
On Monday, Nov. 12 the country and Belmont observes Veterans Day, a national holiday established in 1926 to honor men and women who have served in the military. Government offices, no; stores, yes; businesses, maybe; school, one more day.
Since New Year's fell on a Sunday, the federal and state government extends the holiday one more day, today, Jan. 2. Last week, the trash collection from the town's garbage hauler, Russell Disposal, was a bit of a mess as the firm attempted to pick up on the regular rather than the holiday schedule. As a result, some streets were collected twice, some not at all. So that everyone is on the same page, the town's collection will be delayed a day because of the holiday, according to the town's DPW's calendar. All Belmont government offices are closed today as is the Belmont Public Library. Belmont schools are closed for the holiday recess one more day; schools are in session tomorrow, Tuesday, Jan. 3.
