Belmont's Wellington School Given OK To Receive Final Occupancy Notice

Belmont Planning Board approves sound reduction efforts that took more than a year to accomplish.

Talk about being tardy. It has been 615 days (or 885,600 minutes) since the doors opened on at the new Wellington Elementary School on Sept. 7, 2011 until yesterday, Tuesday, May 14, and for that entire time, the school building has been up and running with a temporary occupancy license issued each month by the Office of Community Development.  That will change when Glenn Clancy, as town engineer, sign his name on a Certificate of Occupancy that will allow the School Department and town to finally close the book on the project. The final dotting of the i's and crossing of the t's will occur after the Belmont Planning Board voted unanimously to close a more than year long public meeting to discuss attempts by the Wellington School Building …

Planning Board: Request for Town Funds to Quiet Wellington Possible

Additional money despite claims by committee that oversaw Willington's construction that building is within town noise bylaw.

Just how much should Belmont spend to be quiet? The answer could come to a vote at the annual Town Meeting this June whether the town should spend upwards of $500,000 or more to mitigate noise coming from the roof top heating and cooling equipment at the Wellington Elementary School. That was the upshot from the most recent Belmont Planning Board meeting held Dec. 11 where the Wellington School Building Committee updated the board on their latest attempts to alleviate the noise emanating from large roof compressors on the Orchard Street-side of the school. The work is the aftermath of numerous complaints heard earlier this year by the Planning Board from a handful of residents living adjacent to the town's newest municipal building who …

The fair, which benefits the Wellington school library and the PTO, kicks off with a Pizza Party with pizza, drinks and homemade baked goods from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Wellington located at 121 Orchard St. (it's the brand-new looking school building on the street, you can't miss it.) Spangler Named New Wellington Principal

Will overlap her tenure with retiring principal Amy Wagner.

Amy Spangler, who spent time as an elementary principal in Oregon, working overseas and in the private education sector, has accepted the offer of the Belmont Public Schools to become the principal of the Wellington Elementary School, said Belmont Schools Superintendent Dr. Thomas Kingston today, Monday, Oct. 29. "Ms. Spangler has a rich educational background and impressive administrative credentials. She served as a principal in public schools in Oregon for over nine years, provided teacher and parent professional development while stationed with her husband in Japan, and most recently was the Senior Director for Learning and Development for Knowledge Universe, a private educational corporation providing early education and care programs…

And the New Wellington Principal Is ...

Whoever it is, an announcement will be made with a name or a discussion to move on.

Belmont's Wellington Elementary School has a new principal. It's just that only Dr. Thomas Kingston, the Belmont School District superintendent, and assistant Superintendent Janice Darias knows who that person is and they aren't telling anyone. It's not that Kingston and Darias are being petulant; rather, they are just as much in the dark as everyone else if either of the finalists, Ellen Quirk or Amy Spangler, have agreed to take over the helm of Belmont's newest school from Wellington's longtime leader, Amy Wagner, who is retiring Dec. 1. "We have made an offer to a candidate," said Kingston.  "I have given her until Monday to let us know if she accepts it," he said. "I’ll issue an announcement, then, on Monday about where we stand in …

Meet the Wellington Finalists: Amy Spangler

After a life-time of travel, experienced administrator looking to settle down.

A decade ago, Amy Spangler had just finished her second year as principal at Forest Hill Elementary School in Lake Oswego, Oregan. She called it the perfect job for the educator at the top of her field: She loved the school and the facility and community were supportive and happy to have her onboard. Then her husband, a high-level executive with Starbucks, told her that he was being transferred to its business hub in Toyko. "It nearly killed me," she told an assembly of teachers, parents and school committee members yesterday, Oct. 25, during the first of two meetings with the parents and staff of the Wellington Elementary School as part of the finalist process as the Belmont School District seeks to replace long-time principal Amy Wagner …

Meet the Wellington Finalists: Ellen Quirk

Second time as a principal candidate in Belmont for Lexington educator doing double duty.

Ellen Quirk patiently waited outside the Wellington Elementary's lunch room Monday night, Oct. 23, watching as parents and students wandered in around 7 p.m. ready to fire questions at one of the two finalist to succeed Amy Wagner  to become the Wellington's new principal. But for the teacher and administrator at Lexington's Bowman Elementary, Belmont has been a destination she knows something about. Quirk's husband is a past Belmont resident and attended the "old" Wellington school as a student coming away with many great memories there. She also was a finalist to be the Burbank Elementary's principal two years ago. "This is a bit like a homecoming with my husband having been at the 'old' school and this is my second time to experience …

Finalists for Wellington Principal Before the Public This Week

Lexington assistant principal and an administrator who is a bit of a mystery.

An assistant principal/teacher from a neighboring town and an experienced administrator with an impressive resume were named finalists Friday, Oct. 19, to replace Amy Wagner as Wellington Elementary School principal, according to Belmont School Superintendent Dr. Thomas Kingston. Lexington's Ellen Quirk and Amy Springer from Greater Atlanta will be presented to teachers, staff and the public today, Monday, and Wednesday at the school. The schedule is: Kingston said earlier this month that hundreds of resumes were received for the position after Wagner offered her resignation in September which will take effect Dec. 1. Ellen Quirk has for the past two years been both the assistant principal and a fifth-grade teacher at the Bowman Elementary…

That might be true, angryeric (angryeric? Wow, you may want to rethink your handle as it's a 'tad' negative) but give them a chance to speak to parents and staff and there might be a great candidate.   more ›

(Photo Gallery) Taking a Stroll to School in Belmont

Two dozen kids and their parents take a trip down Brettwood to take part in the International Walk to School Day.

Just around 8 a.m. today, Wednesday, Oct. 3, first came Max Carboni, then Molly Howe and her friend, Evvie Boas who brought her mom and sister, Sadie. Soon Neyla Cakmak and Ian Qiu were there and so was Michael Coyne, Thomas Boyle and siblings Krista and Owen Chan. They and so many more Wellington Elementary School students arrived at the corner of Horace and Brettwood roads to meet up with second grade teacher Kellye O’Brien to do something that students generations ago did without much thought: walk to school. What had this group of two dozen students who were walking along Brettwood and hundreds of pupils from the Wellington, Butler and Burbank schools on the road was that Belmont had joined more than 110 communities in Massachusetts …

Rain Won't Stop Walk to School Day in Belmont Wednesday

Town schools are joining people around the US, world for international event.

Students will join with parents, teachers, community leaders – Selectman Andy Rojas at the Wellington and Dan Scharfman at the Burbank – and celebrity walkers including Mr. “S”, retired Wellington PE teacher Richard Samaria, as Belmont joins more than 110 communities in Massachusetts and 6,000 worldwide to promote a healthy way to get to school and start the day.
