Home losses pushes record below .500.
A pair of losses at Harris Field has Belmont High School's Girls' Lacrosse team battling to stay above the .500 level that would secure the team a return to the playoffs for the third year running. Against a defensive-strong Lexington High School led by goalie Sara Lehman on Friday, May 3, Belmont's sophomore standout goaltender Linda Herlihy kept the team in the second half with numerous solo saves. Trailing 7-5 early in the second, the Marauder's leading scorer, senior Katie Leinbach (who finished the game with four goals) took over by not just winning consecutive face-offs but scoring goals while holding possession. But after saving two shots – both hitting the post – a goal by Fiona Fitzgerald with 11:40 remaining in the game led to …

Marauders never trailed vs. Winchester; will look to do the same Friday against the Rockets.
After dispatching Winchester High, 56-38, on Tuesday night, Jan. 8 for its seventh win (against a single loss) of the season, Belmont High School Girls' Hoopsters are looking forward to matching up at the end of the week with the best of the best. Head Coach Melissa Hart's team will head up Route 128 for a Friday night battle royal with undefeated Reading High School. That would be a Rocket team unbeaten since December ... of 2011. Ranked number 2 in Eastern Massachusetts by the Boston Globe, the defending Div. 2 state champions (which went 25-0 last year) is led by senior superstar Olivia Healy, which ESPN Boston calls the best female basketball player in the state. The 5'10" forward, who has already committed to play Division 1 …

McLaughlin scores a brace for Girls; Boys run into several very big Sachems.
You couldn't wipe the grin off Head Coach Mark Haley's face and it wasn't because it was frozen in place after spending two hours in North America's coldest indoor rink on Wednesday, Jan. 3. Nope, Haley's satisfaction was due to this season's first complete performance from the Belmont High School Girls Ice Hockey team (2-2-1) as the team overwhelmed Winchester High (4-2) in a comprehensive 3-0 shutout at Belmont's Viglirolo Rink. "They're getting there," said Haley of the team top-heavy with freshmen and sophomores, noting the team beat the Sachems in all facets of the game: goal tending, defense and offense. "It's certainly an improvement and you can see that they are playing at a higher level each time they're on the ice," said Haley…

Ends five years of frustration to Sachems; Girls' Soccer ties up Winchester as both teams earn three-of-four points this season from top-ranked Sachems.
Was it just coincidence or a premonition that at nearly the exact time Belmont Boys' Soccer's Michael Chertkov scored his critical first goal early in the game to pull ahead of Belmont's arch – and long-time dominating – rival and unbeaten Winchester High in their decisive rematch last night, an earthquake in Maine shook the earth in Belmont? Or was it all the other way around? Whether nature or fate, the Marauders scrubbed away five years of frustration at the hands of Winchester with a hard fought 2-1 victory Tuesday night at Belmont's Harris Field, Oct. 16, doling out the season's first loss to the 14th-ranked Sachems. Chertkov scored a brace, the second an open net goal with less than a minute remaining in the game which proved the …

Early strike knots up archrival Winchester while Reading's hard work earns a tie.
Belmont High School Boys' Head Coach Peter Guellnitz "loved" how the last goal of the game was scored in Belmont's tussle with Reading: a scrabble in front of the net, a shot that hit the post and a player rushing at the ball and hitting it into the back of the goal off his knee. Just the type of "ugly" goal Guellnitz appreciates. "He just wanted it more then everyone else," said Guellnitz. Unfortuantly, it was Reading's Jackson Conroy who scored with 8 minutes remaining in the game to pull out a 1-1 draw against the Marauders Friday, Sept. 21, at Harris Field. Conroy's effort nullified Ben Giber's rocket of a shot off a rebound the beat Rocket's goalkeep Nathan Terry seven minutes into the second half to give the Marauders the lead. …

Strong showing vs. state champs leads to convincing win then a home loss.
It was an up and down week for Belmont High School Field Hockey Head Coach Jessica Smith's team. It began Saturday, Sept. 15 with her young team hosting Andover which won the Division I state championship two years running. "I would rather play tough teams like Andover than schedule a weak team that we know we can beat," said Smith. And Smith gave her team a strong challenge as Andover's collective skill and preparation found the Golden Warriors with a well-deserved 2-0 lead at the end of the first half. Yet the Mauraders upped their offensive pressure and were rewarded by playing Andover even in the second half, scoring once from Catherine Noone and the team was robbed of a second with a second left in the game by a superb diving save …

Sophomore defender and senior goalkeeper key in dramatic Marauders Girls' Soccer victory.
Don't tell Paul Graham, Belmont High School's long-time Girls' Soccer head coach, that his team didn't deserve to win Wednesday's match with Middlesex League powerhouse Winchester High School who came to Belmont's Harris Field undefeated. "I can't tell you how many times a fluke play or a missed ball has beaten us here," he said. "You ask our girls if they didn't deserve that final score." After playing on their back feet for a majority of the game and relying on senior goalkeeper Maria-Alice Menetas to make several game-saving saves, a Belmont offensive surge in the final 10 minutes resulted in a hand ball by a Winchester defender on the goal line in the final minute of the match. The resulting penalty shot witnessed sophomore defender …

Two more Belmont female athletes to continue their careers playing college sports.
It was a perfect day Saturday for a lacrosse game: bright sun, warm temperatures and a light breeze. There were, unfortunately, two dampers to the match between Belmont High School and the number one team in the state, Winchester High School; the game started at 9 a.m. and the Sachems handed Belmont their second defeat of the season, 20-14, at Harris Field. While Belmont (8-2-1) could not match the strategic skills of the Sachems, the Marauders never let the score dictate their own performance, coming back from a 10-4 deficit 14 seconds into the second half to match the top rated team in the state goal-for-goal in the final 24:46 minutes. While Winchester (14-1) was best offensively setting up their chances from set plays, Belmont's speed …

Marauder Boys' and Girls' go on to double digit victories over Winchester.
Shaking up their lineups proved to be the winning combination as Belmont's Girls' and Boys' Basketball each came away with double digits victories over visiting Winchester. Girls' find a W in renewed D Belmont Head Coach Melissa Hart shook up her starting lineup against Winchester by inserting junior Katlyn Noonan (4 points in the first quarter) and sophomore guard Gabrielle Joyal and was rewarded with a renewed committment to defense resulting in the Maruaders beating the Sachems, 57-39, at Belmont High School's Wenner Field House. In addition to stellar defense under their basket – Olivia Lyons (11 points) grabbing double digits in rebounds while the Maruader's leading scorer, Katie Leinbach (15 points) had four block shots – Belmont …

Girls' first line does the scoring; Boys' tied it up but could not hold down Winchester.
Belmont High School Girls' Hockey highlighted a top-notch line while a sniper's shot in the final minutes shot down the Belmont Boys' as both teams hosted Winchester on a 60-degree Saturday afternoon, Jan. 7. Front line scoring power Belmont Girls' over Sachems For long-time Belmont Head Coach Mark Haley, the knowledge that you coach one of the best offensive lines in eastern Massachusetts (if not the state) comes at a price. "I wish our other lines would start scoring," he said after Belmont's 5-1 victory over Winchester at Belmont's 'Skip' Viglirolo Skating Rink. "But who's to complain?" he said, after looking at the game sheet, as his top line of senior captain Caroline McCarthy (a goal, 3 assists), senior winger Erin O'Donovan (2 …
